Market Day Vendor Checklist, powered by Square

It doesn’t quite feel like it outside, but Thanksgiving is next week, and our third annual Brooklyn Holiday Bazaar is next weekend! We have such an amazing event planned this year. Great food, cocktails, cider, kombucha, activities for the kiddos, gift wrapping, photo booth… and of course the most talented makers in town. The true stars of the show!

We want to share with you, the makers, our market day checklist that we have built after participating in many markets with Brooklyn Makers and organizing our event for the third year now. It’s a long day and there’s a lot of things to remember! We have put together his list in partnership with Square to help make your day run more smoothly:

Market Day Checklist for Vendors

1. Don’t. Forget. The. Tablecloth.

You’re going to want to grab it first, so make sure it’s easy to access when you pack.

2. Enough product.

Easy to say, right? It’s tricky to gage – reaching out to the event organizer to get information about attendance and what items do best can be helpful with your planning.

3. Square reader and signage!

Not everybody assumes you take cards, so make it clear. Square provides signage to let people know you take cards, which usually nudges them to spend a little more. Make sure you’ve upgraded to an EMV reader for chip cards. We like to have a spare handy just in case. Wanna step it up a notch? Preorder their Contactless reader and say goodbye to swiping and hello to Apple Pay.

4. Cash.

Especially if your items are under $10, some people will default to cash. Make sure you have enough change. Small bills tend to go quickly.

5. Branding.

Display your name with a cool sign that makes sense with the scale of your booth – it doesn’t need to be huge, but make it easy to find. It drives me crazy when I go by a nameless booth. Also, don’t forget business cards and/or postcards – have some on display for people to grab, offer them to people you talk to but that are just looking, and include one with every purchase. It’s a great way to prompt a visit to your online store next time they’re thinking about getting a gift.

6. WATER.

You won’t get many breaks, and you’ll be doing a lot of talking, so it’s important to keep water handy and stay hydrated.

7. Nutritious snacks.

Fruit and nut bars work great – good energy boost, very little mess.

8. A little box or pouch to corral little essentials

Lip balm (again, lots of talking), spare Square reader, tape, pens, sharpies, extra price tags – speaking of which…

9. Price tags!

You definitely need them, some people are shy to ask and tend to assume things are expensive when there’s no price displayed. Make sure they’re pretty! Kraft tags work great and give you enough room to talk up your product as well.

10. Display support.

We love using Lego pieces to prop up tags. Whether you use baskets, wine boxes (ask your local store if they have any they don’t need), trays or a custom setup, it’s important to add visual interest and show off your product at the best angle.

11. Table risers.

They make a world of difference. Get the ones that are stackable so they don’t take up a ton of space when you pack.

12. Shopping bags.

If you’re using them, make sure they display your store’s name (stickers work great for this, we get ours from Sticker Mule). Remember to include a business card or postcard in each one.

13. Extra battery.

All those transactions you’re going to be running drain up your device quickly. Make sure to bring a charger and an extra battery (or even a backup device) that can get you through the day.

14. Layers.

Every venue is different. You may be hot or standing by a drafty spot. Dress in a way that you can be comfortable no matter what.

15. Friends!

Tell your friends to come and have fun at the event. Some may even be able to spare a couple hours to help man your booth.

16. A big smile – it goes a long way!

Look good, feel good, and have fun!

And that’s it! Try to pack efficiently to make your setup and breakdown go quickly. And speaking of breakdown, one more tip – don’t leave early, even if you sell out. It gives a bad impression and shows little care for your fellow vendors and the event itself. When in doubt, be nice!
