A huge extended family means a very long list of gifts for the holidays. Tamara Jerardo turned that challenge into the seed for her business, Brooklyn Candle Studio.
Tamara began candle making the traditional way, but soon moved to a more sustainable approach: “I wanted to create all-natural, safe, eco-friendly candles. Soy is great to work with and is hypoallergenic, so I’m happy to provide this sort of product to candle-lovers who get headaches and allergies from paraffin“. Soy candles will burn about 30-50% longer than paraffin – more candle light for your buck. Because there is no petrol-carbon soot like in traditional paraffin candles, you don’t get any of the blackened walls or toxic carcinogens in the air. It’s just beautiful candle light and delicious scents. Shameless sweet junkies, join my cheering: cinnamon bun!
Brooklyn Candle Studio makes their hand-poured candles in several sizes. The larger mason jar candles make a lovely gift, and will burn for a whopping 36-48 hours.
The sweet little tin candles are awesome stocking stuffers! A set of 4 is just $15.
Since an early age, Tamara was the crafty one of the bunch. “As a kid, I ran my own earrings and homemade marbles stand, rather than sell lemonade or cookies. In college, I made custom order dresses and jewelry“. She expanded her BA in studio art at FIT and SVA, studying graphic design and photography.
A former art director, Tamara is also the talent behind he beautiful labels for her candles: “I’m very inspired by graphic design from the Art Deco and Art Nouveau/Victorian eras – the whimsy of the design elements and fonts with personality. I wanted to do something eye-popping with lots of color that can really serve as a statement piece in addition to making a room smell amazing“.
Each scent gets a different color, from Cucumber Melon to Wildberry Mousse. As far as scent goes, Tamara is quick to pinpoint her favorite: “Lavender, by far. One of my favorite things to do is to get into a warm comfy bed, light my lavender candle, and look at design books while sipping a hot cup of tea. That’s relaxation!”
