that Give Back

School hasn’t ended yet and I’m in full swing getting ready for next year. This September we begin our elementary school journey, and among many other big-kid things, that means getting a big-kid backpack.

What could be better than getting your child a backpack AND, while you’re at it, getting one just like it for a child in need? That’s the concept behind STATE Bags, a Benefit Corporation founded by Brooklyn-based husband & wife duo Scot and Jacqueline Tatelman.

In addition to their Garfield kids backpacks ($55, available in three colors), they offer a more grown-up model (Durham, $65) that includes a padded laptop sleeve.

If you want to go all out, their stylish Mercer backpack ($225) features a water-repellent waxed cotton canvas exterior and leather straps. For every Mercer backpack sold, STATE donates either a Garfield bag or a Durham bag to an American student living in an impoverished neighborhood.

Since their launch in January, STATE hit the ground running with five bag drop events in just a few months. “we targeted Sandy-effected areas which brought us to both Red Hook and the Rockaways, where we hand-delivered more than 100 bags to kids hit very hard by the storm. Jacqueline and I have a lot of history working with Brooklyn kids through Camp POWER – our nonprofit summer camp program we founded 5 years ago – so we will absolutely be looking to hand-deliver more STATE bags to Brooklyn kids!“. On their site you can find more information about their bag drop & fundraising events and watch inspiring videos documenting the events.

Scot and Jacq have a lot coming down the pipeline this summer (ready for back-to-school, anybody?). A new shoulder/tote bag design will begin shipping in July. A collaboration with local designers Ricky & Dee is in the works. Large bag drop events are scheduled in tornado-affected Oklahoma and underfunded Boston neighborhoods. They are also working on bringing the manufacturing and production of their stylish give-back backpacks to the US. “That’s really important to us and we expect to make it happen soon, but just couldn’t make the costs work during our launch phase.

You will find STATE Bags at our upcoming Brooklyn Holiday Bazaar on December 14th. You can also shop online at
