A few weeks ago I began what seemed like a fairly simple task – with summer upon us, my two kiddos were kicking off their duvets the minute I walked out of the room after putting them to bed, so it was time to find quilts for them. I started perusing at options from different children’s stores, and was mildly horrified. Apparently my boys are supposed to sleep snugly covered by trucks, dinosaurs, sports balls, or perhaps spaceships. Chamo pattern for my two year old? Well, of course! Really? Really.
In the midst of all that creative wasteland, MUNY is a welcome oasis. Check out this awesome quilt.
Owner Samara Mahendru is bringing her two worlds together (Mumbai + NY = MUNY) with beautiful design and exquisite, traditional craftsmanship. The goods are designed in Brooklyn and skillfully made in Jaipur, in north-western India. They use an ancient technique to apply the designs called hand-block printing, similar to letterpress printing on paper.
As described on their site, “the process of block printing involves applying color to an intricately carved teak wood block and pressing it firmly and steadily to the fabric. The blocks are pressed over and over again depending on how many colors and designs are in the print. Azo free, eco-friendly dyes are used. All the clothes are pre-washed and pre-shrunk.”
Besides their twin, queen and toddler-bed quilts, MUNY offers gorgeous throws handmade from recycled saris. Each throw is unique and absolutely beautiful.
And for the youngest of the bunch, there are some incredibly soft blankets. They’re made with three layers of cotton, of which only the middle layer is printed, leaving the outer layers exceptionally snuggly. The designs are delicate and beautiful – these will surely stay in use well after the baby years.
